Dental Sealants

The most common site for cavity development in your child’s mouth is on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These surfaces, unlike others, are not smooth but are instead characterized by tiny grooves known as “pits and fissures,” which easily trap bacteria and food particles. Despite diligent brushing, toothbrush bristles often fail to reach these dark, moist crevices, creating an ideal environment for tooth decay.

Additionally, newly erupted permanent teeth are less resistant to decay compared to adult teeth. The enamel coating protecting the teeth strengthens over time, aided by fluoride found in toothpaste, drinking water, and dental treatments. However, it remains challenging to effectively deliver fluoride to these pits and fissures regularly. Fortunately, a practical solution exists: dental sealants.

Dental sealants are transparent plastic resin coatings that level the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, rendering them resistant to decay. A sealed tooth is significantly less prone to cavity formation, reducing the likelihood of requiring costly dental interventions in the future and, most importantly, sparing your child from discomfort.
